PURPOSE: To retrieve a retrieval object record group which is longer than single- time maximum transfer length of a communication without being aware of the maximum transfer length on the side of an application program(AP) and to enable the AP to speedily start a process for a record to be retrieved. ;CONSTITUTION: The monitor part 8 of a computer 6 retrieves a data base 10 at a retrieval request from the AP 2 on a computer 1. Once a check part 9 detects the length of the obtained record group to be retrieved being longer than the single-time maximum transfer length of a communication, the retrieval is interrupted and a retrieval result which includes a record group to be retrieved in a range wherein the maximum transfer length is not exceeded and additional information indicating that all records to be retrieved are not included is sent back to the computer 1. The monitor part 3 of the computer 1 checks whether or not there is the additional information at a check part 5 and informs the AP 2 that all the records to be retrieved are not included and of the record group to be retrieved that is returned when the additional information is present. Once the AP 2 sends a request to continue the retrieval request, the monitor part 8 carries on the remaining retrieval and performs similar operation.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1995,JPO
