PURPOSE: To provide a hydrogel forming polymeric material prepared from an ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid polymer, showing a predetermined relative fracture resistance value, excellent in highly absorptive characteristics and tenacity and useful for a sanitary article such as a disposable diaper or the like. ;CONSTITUTION: The objective hydrogen forming polymeric material is prepared from (A) a first compd. selected from a group consisting of ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid compds. (salts) such as (meth)acrylic acid or the like and a second compd. such as poly(ethylene glycol) acrylate or the like containing a functional group selected from a group consisting of an ether group and a hydroxyl group and shows a relative fracture resistance value larger than that of a hydrogel forming polymeric material, which shows an absorbency under load of 14 or more and is substantially the same other than that prepared in the absence of the second compd., by 25% or more.
