PURPOSE: To optimize the ignition angle by bringing the first-grade and the second-grade inertial force into an independent state in the manner reducing oscillation parameter of an engine. CONSTITUTION: An in-line engine 1 involves a plurality of cylinders having pistons 7 respectively connected to crank throws linked on a shared crankshaft 12. The crank throw is positioned at a prescribed angle position corresponding to the ignition angle of a cylinder and adjusted to at least two different values within the angle difference (j -j-1 ) between the ignition angles of the cylinders ignited successively. At this time, the first-grade inertial force of the engine 1 is brought into a non-equilibrium state and, if the mass in reciprocating motion of a cylinder is equal, the second-grade inertial force is brought into an unequilibrium state. At least two cylinders are then adjusted so as to be different from the mass in reciprocating motion of other cylinders, therefore the first-grade inertial force is brought into an equilibrium state. It is thus possible to reduce the selected oscillation parameter and bring the first- and second-grade inertial forces into an independent state for optimizing an ignition angle ().
