PURPOSE: To provide a method for improving water quality and a device for improving water quality to promote a natural purifying effect in a waterway which largely influences the ecosystem. ;CONSTITUTION: In this method to improve water quality in a waterway, at least one kind of improving material for water quality such as pyrolignous acid-injected carbon, highly ionized active calcium, chitin-chitosan, natural salt, coral, and ceramic material which emits far infrared rays at room temp. is settled in the waterway so that water flowing through the waterway is brought into contact with this improving agent. Further, a concrete member 3 which constitutes a waterway has a fitting part 5 for a capsule 6 formed in the bottom of the waterway.
