PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To produce diisopropyl ether that is useful as a component for high octane value additives by reaction of crude acetone stream over a bifunctional catalyst in one step. ;SOLUTION: A crude stream containing acetone, methanol, and t-butyl alcohol is subjected to a one step reaction to obtain an aqueous liquid rich in methyl t-butyl ether, methyl isopropyl ether, diisopropyl ether, isopropyl t-butyl ether. In this reaction, a bifunctional catalyst (hydrogenation/etherification) is used. In other words, the bifunctional catalyst comprises 5-45 wt.% of a catalyst consisting essentially of a hydrogenation catalyst selected from the group consisting of one or more metals selected from the group consisting of IB, VIB, or VIII or the Periodic Table and a heteropoly acid on a 55%-95% of the total weight of the catalyst of a support comprising a compound selected from the group of consisting of: a. a metal phosphate b. 5-95 wt.% of metal phosphate supported on 95-5 wt.% Group III or IV oxide; and c. a large pore silicoaluminophosphate.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1996,JPO
