PURPOSE:To record high-definition TV signals of different standards on a recording medium by the same recorder. CONSTITUTION:The number of frame effective lines, the number of frame total lines and the filed frequency are set at 1080, 1125 and 60Hz respectively for an HD signal A together with 1035, 1125 and 60Hz set for an HD signal B, 960, 1050 ad 60Hz set for an HD signal C, and 1152, 1250 and 50Hz set for an HD signal D respectively. Then these signals A-D are inputted and decided by an input deciding circuit 21. The number of lines included vertically in a single screen is changed for the signal A by a line conversion circuit 23 so that the number of lines of the signal A is equal to that of the signal B. The signals A/B and C/D have different pixels per frame. However these different pixels are equal to each other in the over-scan ranges of frame transmission ranges of both signals C and D. Then the data are compressed and recorded on a magnetic tape.
