PURPOSE: To provide a method quickly estimating the exact power consumption of an electric circuit, in the LSI design of the electric circuit such as a CMOS. ;CONSTITUTION: This method is the one for estimating the power consumption of an electric circuit provided with an element and a signal line for transmitting an input/ output signal to this element. The method is composed of a step ST 1 determining a probability in which the output signal for an input signal for each element changes and determining an expression showing the change probability of the output signal as the function of the change probability of the input signal by utilizing this probability, a step ST 2 imparting the change probability of the input signal, a step ST 3 determining the change probability of the signal in each signal line for the input signal having a prescribed change probability by using this expression and a step ST 4 estimating the power consumption of the electric circuit by summing up the product of the change probability of each signal line and the load of each signal line. Thus, the power consumption of the circuit can be easily and quickly estimated from the change probability of each signal line even if a logical simulation is not performed, using a test pattern.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1996,JPO
