PURPOSE: To improve the performance of the multi-channel total optical ring communication network by shortening signal propagation delay time in the communication network. CONSTITUTION: The communication network is provided with two multiplexers/ demultiplexers 8 for respectively multiplexing/demultiplexing optical signals transmitted in respectively reverse directions on an wavelength multiplexed ring to respective nodes D, optical packet exchanges 100, 200 for respectively processing demultiplexed signals and a node controller 20 for determining the direction of transmission of a signal generated from its own node. Each of the exchanges 100, 200 is provided with an address processor 7 for inspecting the address of a received signal and an optical switch 6 for fetching a receiving signal to its own node.
