In the present invention there is disclosed a process for making a tantalum powder from a base material containing at least one metal powder selected from the Group V-B of the Periodical Table of Elements, the process comprising: reacting a quantity of nitrogen with said base material to form at least 500 to 7000 ppm by weight of nitrogen in said material, reacting a quantity of oxygen with said base material sufficient to form at least 700 to 3000 ppm by weight of oxygen in said material. The invented tantalum powder BET is less than about 0.6 me2/g, an average agglomerated particle size thereof is 425 microns, a quantity of nitrogen is in the range of about 500 ppm to 7000 ppm by weight nitrogen, and a quantity of oxygen being in the range of about 700 ppm to 3000 ppm by weight of oxygen.
