The present invention provides a method and device fordetecting the presence of binding ligands, especiallyblood group antigens or antibodies thereto, whichutilize a matrix of substantially noncompressablemicroparticles, which matrix provides superiorperformance in allowing movement of nonagglutinatedreactants, especially red blood cells, whileconstraining, preferably in a so-called "bandformation" agglutinated reactants, especially red bloodcells.
