In its circumferential surface the pump piston (4) of the fuel injection pump has control edges (5) running at an angle to its longitudinal axis, which control edges together with holes made in the pump cylinder (2) determine the start and end of pumping by the pump piston. Working in concert with the pump piston (4) is a device pivoting about the longitudinal axis of the said piston, which comprises a regulating rod (25), supported outside the pump cylinder (2) and having the facility for reciprocal movement in a straight line. Arranged between the regulating rod (25) and the pump piston (4) is an adjusting sleeve (20), eccentrically enclosing the latter and provided with inner toothing (19), which engages with the inner toothing in an outer toothing (18) arranged on the pump piston (4) and which is pivotally joined to the regulating rod.
