A self-cleaning filter cartridge consists of a cylindrical housing (10, 100) and an inner filter insert (22, 106). The novelty is that the assembly has a fine-mesh filter screen (32, 108) which forms the covering surface of a cylindrical or truncated cone-shaped filter basket (30, 110). In addn., a closure unit (66) is provided to force the liq. or gas flow through the filter screen (32) or alternatively to allow it at least in part to flow along the filter screen (32) and out of the cartridge, the solid particles which adhere to the filter screen (32) being detached by the current and pressure and flushed away.
