The parking system comprises a number of parking meters arranged at parking spaces and which are connected to the public telephone network. A processing device cooperates with a chip card for payment of the parking fees due. The chip card may or may not be contact-less and has a credit function to indicate the telephone account from which the parking fees may be booked off. A card authentication procedure is performed using a DES algorithm.
