Appts. for filtering contaminated liquid, e.g. industrial waste water or ground water, comprises a vertical vessel with an inwardly inclined lower end and holding a sand bed (2), a standpipe connected to a gas supply and located in a pump tube (3) located in the bed and coupled to a screen in the bed and ending short of the vessel wall, and a tube assembly (4,5) discharging incoming liquid above the screen. The tube has two vertically spaced groups of centering members (14,15) resting on the inclined wall. The upper group of centering members is pref. coupled to the screen and the lower group is formed by adjustable length screw spindles. The standpipe lower end is pref. mounted in an adjustable eccentric supported by the tube to permit radial adjustment, and its upper end carries a unit for washing filter material carried upwardly by the pump.
