Al dross residue is processed by reaction at about 1360 [deg]C with a Ca-O cpd. to form calcium aluminate in at least partially molten form, before rapid cooling to afford a glassy solid prod. The dross contains Al and alumina, and originates from Al prodn. Al is sepd. from the dross to leave the dross residue; sepn. of the Al from the dross and reaction of the residue with the Ca-O cpd. are performed in a common vessel. The calcium aluminate prod. is used in steel making.
