Pyrrole, indole, furan and thiophene derivatives having an alkyl substituent in the 2 position with one or two electron-attracting groups in the α position are prepared by reacting the corresponding compounds having an atom of hydrogen in the 2 position with an alkyl iodide having one or two electron-attracting groups in the α position.
