The invention refers to a method and a device for monitoring the spectrum in communication systems, especially burst type radio communications with enlarged spectrum, especially of the so-called frequency or time jumping type, in which the transmission is carried out in interrupted manner with a succession of transmission bursts R1, R2, which are separated from each other by intervals of time I1, I2 in which no transmission takes place, while each burst R1, R2 is divided into successive intervals of time (time windows) F1-F6, intercalated with very brief intervals of time in which the transmission is interrupted. To avoid an excessive loss of transmission efficiency, guaranteeing a virtually real-time monitoring of the particular spectrum for the radio communication system, the monitoring of the spectrum is carried out in one of the time windows F7 of each burst R1, R2, which is left "empty" of message units, the transmission being interrupted for the entire duration of said time window F7.
