The external rotor (1) has magnets (11) and internal teeth (19). A rotor (4) turns on bearings (35,43) and has an internal gear (42) meshing via cogs (51,52,53) with the teeth (19). A cog-supporting lever arm (5) has a pull-off spring (55) against centrifugal and friction forces which prevail when the starter motor (42) is engaged. When the engine is in motion the arm is recalled and the transmission is disengaged while the arm (5) detaches the battery supply.
