Modular base element for the construction of a connection network in a switch node with ATM technique, able to identify and switch cells of different priority level; it comprises a plurality of inputs IN1-INn, connected to two memory layers RM via as many blocks SYNC which, besides effecting synchronisation operations, separate the routing information of the cells, a plurality of outputs OUT1-OUTn from the memory block RM, a shared memory unit BC in which the cells are temporarily contained, and a control unit CTRL which comprises the function of enabling the memorisation of a cell with low priority level only if the number of cells present in the shared memory BC is less than a predetermined threshold THRES.
