Instrument and process for the direct measurement of the reverberation time, based on the determination of the acoustic energy density decay time. The said instrument consists essentially of analog-digital converters ADC, banks of digital filters DF, adders SIGMA, etc. To measure the three components of the velocity vector (Fig. 1) it is possible to use, for example, six phase-coupled microphones, each pair being located along one of the three orthogonal directions. The processing time of the six pressure signals obtained from the microphones must be less than the period corresponding to the frequency of sampling the signals acquired in the acoustic range which is to be analysed. By measuring the acoustic energy density instant by instant, it is thus possible to determine its decay time by following the known methods for evaluating the impulse response of the acoustic system. The invention relates to the technical field of acoustics and can be appropriately applied in the field of acoustic monitoring instruments. The invention constitutes an advance, especially in the systems of monitoring the acoustic energy absorption properties of environments. IMAGE
