To overcome the drawbacks of conventional single-unit air conditioners, a single-unit air conditioner is proposed in which the conditioning elements (36, 37, 38, 39, 40) are all enclosed in a single conditioning cylinder (25). This can be installed in a vertical position, thereby reducing to a minimum the floor area required for the single-unit air conditioner. The cylindrical design and coaxial arrangement of the conditioning elements offer the advantage that, for a given floor area occupied, they have considerably more cross-flow sections than planar elements. This allows a reduction in the cross-flow speed of the air and in the pressure drop in the single-unit air conditioner. This in turn makes it possible to use lower-powered fans, thus reducing the unit's energy consumption. A heat recovery element in the form of a continuous circulating heat recovery band (24), which can consist of a multi-layered copper- or aluminium wire braid and has a high degree of efficiency, can be incorporated in the single unit air conditioner.
