Mfr. of carbamazepine (I) comprises (a) reacting a suspension of iminostilbene (II) in a cyclic ether with phosgene at 20-70[deg]C. and (b) neutralising and amidating the resulting iminostilbene carbonyl chloride (III) with ammonia at 50-100[deg]C. under 1-7 bar pressure.
