The parts to be coated (10a, 10b, 10c) are heated to a temperature above 1000.degree.C in a box (1) further containing, and separately, a donor body (9) in the form of granules comprising the metal to be deposited and a body (5) composed at least of anhydrous powder of chromium fluoride Fe3 Cr constituting an activator, source of fluorine. A controlled flow of a carrier gas, reducing or neutral, is introduced (4) into the box so as to establish a circulation in the box of the fluorinated vapors (13) obtained, after thermal decomposition of Fe3Cr and formation of volatile fluoride from from the donor. A device for implementing the method is also described.
