DOCUMENT REVISING SYSTEM FOR USE WITH DOCUMENT READING AND TRANSLATING SYSTEM

An image-to-character-position-correspondence-table producing unit produces image-to-character-position-correspondence-table composed of a setcomprising an-image-of-a-document, a character-recognized document and a translated document. Acandidate character producing unit produces candidatec h a r a c t e r s f o r b a c k i n g u p t h e r e v i s i o n o fmisrecognized characters. A Japanese-document-to-translated-document correspondence table stores acorrespondence relationship between an originalJapanese document and a translated document in theform of a table. When misrecognized characters arebeing revised, the image-to-character-position-correspondence-table is displayed by the image-to-character-position-correspondence-table. A revisingunit prompts a user to specify a misrecognized portionin the translated document of the image-to-character-position-correspondence-table. Next, the revisingunit refers to the Japanese-document-to-translated-document correspondence table to extract a portion ofeach of the-image-of-the-document and the recognizeddocument that corresponds to the specified portion andcauses the image-to-character-position-correspondence-table producing unit to display the correspondingportions. Subsequently, the revising unit refers tothe candidate character producing unit to extractcandidate characters as requested by the user andcauses the image-to-character-position-correspondence-table producing unit to display these candidatecharacters. Candidate characters are selected by theuser. The misrecognized portion in the recognizeddocument is replaced with the selected candidatecharacters, a new character-recognized document istranslated and a newly translated document isdisplayed. In this way even foreigners who havelittle knowledge of Japanese can carry out revisionwork on misrecognized characters with ease.
