DISINFECTION BY-PRODUCTS REMOVAL IN WATER PURIFICATION

Improved methods for removal of disinfection by-products,halomethanes, precursors thereof and other organic contaminants fromwater being processed for use as potable or industrial water involve addingto the water being treated in a zone separate from the conventionalclarification, softening and filtration steps, and downstream of at least theclarification step, between about 1 to 1000 ppm of powdered activatedcarbon (PAC), between about 1 to 1000 ppm of bentonite and betweenabout 0.1 to 100 ppm of flocculant polymer, based upon one million parts ofthe water. The relative proportions of PAC, bentonite and polymer withinthe stated ranges are selected to give a sludge having a sludge cohesionfactor "k" between about 0.5 and 5, especially between 0.6 and 1.5.
