The present invention relates to a catalyst for the gas treatment contenantdes sulfur compounds and / or hydrolysis of organic sulfur compounds comprising as essential compound of the catalytically active alumina sodium contenantdu, characterized in that the sodium content of the alumina is chosen in the range between 1200 ppm and 2700 ppm of Na2O. The catalysts of the invention are useful in particular for treating gas containing sulfur compounds with a view to producing elementary sulfur by implementation of the Claus reaction and gases containing organic sulfur by hydrolysis of these organic compounds.
