A safety penetrating instrument (20) for penetrating an anatomical cavity wall(W) includes a penetrating member (38) having a distal end, a distally-biasedsafety member (26) having a distal end movable between an extended positionprotecting the distal end of the penetrating member (38) and a retractedposition exposing the distal end of the penetrating member (38), an extendingmechanism (48) for moving the safety member (26) to the extended position andfor permitting the safety member (26) to move proximally toward the retractedposition, a handle (24) for manually moving the safety member (26) to theretracted position, and a lock (64) for locking the safety member (26) in theretracted position during penetration of the wall. A trigger (82) isresponsive to movement of the penetrating member (38) or the safety member(26) toward the retracted position to release the lock (64).
