IMPROVED METHOD FOR THE TREATMENT AND STABILIZATION OF HAZARDOUS WASTE

A composition and process for the safe removal and treatment of hazardouswaste material (2) is described. This composition is a mixture of grout likecement containing hazardous waste and a minor amount of an alkali metalsilicate and a gelling agent (11). Some of the cement may be replaced by blastfurnace slag, fly ash or kiln dust. The hazardous waste (2) is then safelycontained within the resulting cementitious material and can be safelydisposed by burial (16), for example. The contaminated wastes are containedwithin the block (17) and will not be exposed by regular soil actions. Inaddition, a vault-like formation made from the composition of this inventionmay be used to contain the hazardous wastes (2). This composition and processis particularly useful for treating soil contaminated by low level radioactivematerials.
