Use of anionic flocculants and hydroxamated polymers as Bayer Process red mud flocculents

The suspended solids content of Bayer Process settler and/or washer train feeds is reduced by contacting the stream(s) of the Bayer Process first with an anionic flocculant and then with a polymer which contains hydroxamic acid and/or salt groups, whereby the settling rate and/or clarity thereof is improved.
