This invention is an endoscopic viewing system for maintaining a surgeon's normal sense of kinesthesia during endoscopic surgery regardless of the orientation of the endoscope (105) vis-a-vis the surgeon (5). Tracking devices (110, 115) are used to determine the relative orientation between the endoscope (105) and the surgeon (5). A signal processing device (120) modifies video signals from the endoscope (105) in accordance with the tracking devices (110, 115) so as to maintain the surgeon's normal sense of kinesthesia.
