A method for quantizing a signal on a regular two-dimensional hexagonal lattice by combining points in a two-dimensional space with the values taken by the signal, applying an origin-centred homothety to each point so that all the homothetic points are located within a reference hexagon, determining the points that are closest to the homothetic points and located on said hexagonal lattice, and encoding the co-ordinates of said points of the hexagonal lattice. Said reference hexagon is an origin-centred hexagon rotated through π/6 rad relative to the Voronoi regions of said hexagonal lattice.
