In an air dryer for compressed air systems chargeable by a compressor, especially air brake systems of vehicles, connection, control and valve devices and a discharge valve (29) pressure-controlled by a pressure governor (27) are arranged in a housing (1) connected to an air drying cartridge (3). A silencer device is connected to the discharge valve (29) on the output side in an outlet connection (46) of the housing (1); this device comprises a silencer (47) integral with the housing and a further external silencer (49) fixed on the outlet of the integral silencer. In order to achieve further silencing of the discharge noise of the air dryer, a nozzle (51) is provided in the connecting duct (bore 41) extending between the pressure governor (27) and the discharge valve (29) and carrying the control pressure for the discharge valve; by means of this nozzle the pressure build-up above the control piston (43) of the discharge valve (29) is delayed when the pressure governor (27) is switched.
