the spectral characteristics of a fiber amplifier gain in erbium doped have been modified by introducing a filter change of gain in the amplifier. the filter is chosen so as to change the gain spectrum of the amplifier so as to remove the natural ridge and flat gain profile of the gain and spectrum.as the amplifier is distributed, it is possible to insert one or more filter (s) along the length of the fiber. it is shown that there are considerable advantages to the filter along the length of the amplifier, rather than at the end of it, which is the most appropriate location.the advantages lie in the fact that the efficiency of the pump of the amplifier is almost not affected, and the saturation power of flow is similar to that of the amplifier is not formed.in addition, the flat spectral gain provides an ideal amplifier for use in a number of signal wavelengths, as required for the wavelength division multiplexing (wdm).the invention includes the concept of filtering to modify the shape of the response of the gain of the amplifier and the discovery that this can be done without a disadvantage if we place with one or more filters along the length of the amplifier.
