The invention relates to a process for the recovery of ammonia and organic compounds from exhaust gases laden with organic substances, carbon dioxide and ammonia, which involves employing a combined absorption and rectification column to scrub carbon dioxide with aqueous alkali, drawing off ammonia as the top product and recovering from the bottom product, which contains alkali metal carbonate and organic compounds, the organic compounds in pure form after removing the alkali metal carbonate.
