The fluctuations in cross-section of the slivers (2) produced are recorded by means of a sensor (1) and quality parameters are derived therefrom, one of the latter being formed by mass non-uniformity. These measurement signals (MS) are compared with a first limit value for deviations from the desired weight of the monitored sliver (2), which is formed as a product of the mass non-uniformity and selectable limit-value factor.
