The television system allows television images conforming to the CCIR standard to be represented on the screen of a television receiver with 16:9 width to height ratio, by detecting when the received images have an insufficient number of lines, for switching the vertical deflection generator deflection current, to ensure that the full screen (14) is filled. When a line compression is detected, this is suppressed so that the video information for each line extends over the full screen width, unless the resulting image would exhibit distortion. The received standard PAL format images with a 4:3 width to height ratio are passed through a line expansion circuit, for filling the full screen width.
