The present invention relates to a whitening cosmetic composition containing astaxanthin, which is a kind of carotenoid, as an active ingredient, wherein astaxanthin is contained in an amount of 0.0001 to 0.5% (w / w), preferably 0.001 to 1 % (w / w). The astaxanthin-containing whitening cosmetic composition according to the present invention is excellent in the effect of suppressing the abnormal pigmentation of skin, organic radicals generated in vivo, and active oxygen species.
