The present invention relates to a circuit and a method for reducing the gate voltage of a transfer gate to prevent overvoltage which can affect the reliability of the transfer gate and which may also cause damage.;The transfer gate is connected to the capacitor and is in the charge pumping circuit 41 to generate a voltage greater than the supply voltage. The buffers 44 and 45 receive the control signal and are connected to the gate terminal of the transfer gate. The buffers 44 and 45 include a power supply terminal to which the variable voltage reference circuit 43 is connected. The variable voltage reference circuit 43 provides a charge pump circuit and a voltage that reduces the gate voltage of the transfer gate when the output voltage reaches a predetermined voltage. The variable voltage reference circuit 43 reduces the voltage range between the logic levels provided by the buffers 44 and 45 to protect the transfer gate from overvoltage.
