The present invention discloses a thermotropic side chain type liquid crystal polymer and a ferroelectric liquid crystal display device employing the same as an orientation film. The side chain type liquid crystal polymer of the present invention can be easily synthesized and can be dissolved in a common organic solvent, so that it has excellent processability and excellent other light transmittance, environmental resistance and adhesiveness. Therefore, the liquid crystal display element of the present invention employing this liquid crystal polymer has a uniform alignment film with few defects, and thus has excellent contrast ratio and memory characteristics.
