The present disclosure discloses techniques for effectively using memory in determining the next state's accumulation cost in a communication system and a Viterbi decoder. The system includes a memory having a register arrangement. The first current state accumulation cost is retrieved from the first storage register of the array. The second current state accumulation cost is retrieved from the second storage register of the array. The first next state accumulation cost is calculated based on the first current state accumulation cost. The first next state accumulation cost is stored in the first storage register of the array. An advantage of the present invention is that it requires less memory to calculate and store the cost of accumulation. One memory location is required for each individual state, which is approximately half of the memory location previously required.
