The shape of the energy change of the auditory signal is used to identify or display features that can be perceived by the human ear that exhibit a distinct negative shape. In order to extract information from the shape of the energy change, the shape is preferably displayed in the form of a transient pulse of the signal. Envelope detection is preferably used to obtain transient signal pulses. Energy changes that represent distinct negative shapes may be phonemes or vowels. The present invention also relates to a method for identifying an energy change in an audible signal by comparing the shape of the energy change of the signal that can be displayed as the shape of the transient pulse with a photographed energy change shape representing a distinct negative shape. The present invention also relates to a language synthesis method in which a series of transient pulses are generated corresponding to a series of phonemes to be synthesized. In addition, the present invention relates to a system for processing an auditory signal, comprising means for extracting transient components of an auditory signal and means for detecting an envelope of transient components, in order to substantially reduce the bandwidth of the signal while still retaining the information of the signal will be. Such a system may be used as a pre-processing system in an electronic system for language or speech analysis. The method and apparatus of the present invention may be used in the fields of language identification, language synthesis, narrowband telecommunications, correlators, and audio quality measurement of audio products.
