A spiro (indolino) oxazine compound having the following general formula (I).;Wherein R 1 is represented by the general formula -NR 2 R 3 , wherein R 2 and R 3 are the same as or different from each other, and independently represent an alkyl group or a carbocyclic, preferably an aryl group or a heterocyclic group Or R 2 and R 3 together with the nitrogen atom to which they are attached form a heterocyclic group having one or more heteroatoms, and may optionally have one or more substituents selected from alkyl, aryl or heteroaryl groups; R 4 is an alkyl group which may be straight chain, branched or alicyclic; R 5 and R 6 may be the same as or different from each other and represent an alkyl group or a carbocyclic or heterocyclic group, or R 5 and R 6 together with the carbon atom to which they are attached, are optionally selected from alkyl, aryl or heteroaryl groups A carbocyclic or heterocyclic ring which may bear one or more substituents; R 7 represents a hydrogen atom or an alkyl, aryl or heteroaryl group, or a carbocyclic or heterocyclic group fused to heterocyclic ring B; R 8 represents a hydrogen atom or a substituent or dialkylamino group selected from alkyl, alkoxy, aryl, aryloxy, heteroaryl, halogen, azo, imino, amide, ester, cyano, trifluoromethyl or nitro group; -X is selected from -O-, -S-, -Se-, -NH- or -NR-, where R represents an alkyl group; Ring A is a carbocyclic or heterocyclic ring which may be optionally substituted with an R 8 group as defined above, or may be a carbocyclic or heterocyclic ring optionally fused thereto. The spiro (indolino) oxazine compounds of the present invention are useful as photochromic materials in lenses such as, for example, sunglasses, and photochromic materials in vehicles and aircraft.
