The present invention relates to an in-line torque meter for use with an absorbing dynamometer such that the torsion of a rotating shaft (70) transmitting torque from an engine to an air dynamometer is measured by a single sensor in the structure of an adjacent stop. The torque axis 70 is supported at the end of the dynamometer by the splines attached to the shaft 16 of the dynamometer 10 and at the end of the engine within a pair of pre-pressurized angular ball bearings 74. Torque from the engine causes the shaft to twist. Two sleeves 66, 68, attached to each end of the torque shaft, with protruding teeth 67, 69, are attached to the shaft 70 and rotate therewith. The protruding teeth 67, 69 are interleaved and positioned such that both sets of teeth can be sensed by an adjacent sensor 64 adjacent thereto. When the shaft is twisted by the applied torque, the teeth on the two sleeves are angularly displaced relative to one another.
