FIELD: analytical chemistry of organic compounds. SUBSTANCE: isolation of guaiacol from aqueous solutions containing pyrocatechol is conducted be means of extraction from a sample being analyzed with organic solvent (n-butyl alcohol) in presence of desalting out agent (lithium nitrate solution) and lead acetate. Guaiacol is then determined photometrically using reaction with diazotized sulfanylic acid in aqueous or organic phase. Method is intended to be carried out after tenfold concentration of initial aqueous solution and allows guaiacol isolation degree and accuracy of guaiacol determination to be increased by 20.6 and 10%, respectively. Method may be recommended for monitoring waste water from cellulose-paper, coal-tar chemical, and aniline-dye industries. EFFECT: enhanced efficiency of isolation and analytical processes.
