FIELD: chemical industry. SUBSTANCE: claimed method comprises pretreating fibers by contacting them with alkaline solution of amphoteric surface active agent, subsequently applying dye stuff onto pretreated fibers in dye stuff solution which is substantially free from agents such as surface active agents. The claimed invention also describes new surface active compound containing alkoxylated hydroxysulfobetaine of formula (I): wherein R₁ is hydrocarbon group selected from C₁₂H₂₅-C₂₁H₄₃; R₂ and R₃ are polyalkyleneoxide groups each of which contains n alkyleneoxide fragments wherein 3 n 21. Claimed invention also discloses method for applying dye stuff onto keratin fibers which comprises contacting fibers with dye stuff solution containing alkaline solution of said surface active agent and subsequently adding the dye stuff to the dye stuff solution and applying the dye stuff onto fibers from dye stuff solution. EFFECT: improved properties of the dye stuff.
