Process for biological nitrification and denitrification of highly conc. inorganic nitrogen cpds. in liq. medium is claimed by a hydrolysis- and acidification step and with microorganisms on a growth support. A tert. circulation is provided after a physico-chemical post-treatment of the biologically treated medium by oxidn. and/or adsorption and/or pptn. and flocculation stages whereby an amt. of the liq. medium proportional to the input loading is passed from a post clarification unit (4) to a denitrification step (14) either directly or via a mixing- and compensation vessel (2).
