A procedure for the detection and elimination of earth fault arcs in single pole encapsulated switchgear plants(21) for quenched networks uses arc sensors(22) for the three phase conductors. When one is actuated, the earth switch (8) in the plant for that conductor is tripped. Depending on the position of the arc sensor, the section (7) with the earthed conductor is cleared with a circuit breaker (5). For double busbar plants, the tie breaker (20) is opened through which the busbar section with the arc is supplied. If a busbar has an in-line breaker which is open, the sensor trips one earth switch, tests for continued arc presence, then trips the other one.
