Train waggon characteristics updating method for marshalling yard

The method includes a step of measuring the velocity and wheel loading of the waggon to obtain actual measured values for the waggon characteristics, within a marshalling yard, compared with stored long-term mean characteristic values, to provide updated mean characteristic values. Replacement mean characteristic values have components provided by the stored long-term mean characteristic values and components provided by the updated long-term mean characteristic values, the latter component reducing in dependence on the time interval since the last updating.
