The method involves firstly decoding a sequence of redundancy-encoded input images with respect to the movement occurring between them to produce movement decoded intermediate images. These images are then interpolated for further redundancy decoding and for flicker elimination. The movement detection and the flicker elimination involves using the same movement vectors which are either received at the input or generated from the sequence of input images. Pref. a control device (1) performs the movement decoding and generates the intermediate images. A memory (4) receives its input from the control device, and stores the intermediate images. An interpolator (2) is connected to the memory output for performing redundancy decoding and flicker elimination. A further memory (5) may be provided for storing the movement vectors and supplying them to the interpolator. The image sequence can then be passed through a D/A converter and signal shaper for controlling a television screen.
