Continuous blast furnace for fine, low carbon steels

The continuous blast furnace is half-filled with a mass (6) of vulcanic granite gravel. The lower chamber (7) near the tap hole (5) for the crude iron flow is smaller. The upper section is large enough to take a charge of conventional ore mixture (9) for smelting, through a lid (10) at the upper opening (4). Burners (11), pref. oil burning, are in the sidewalls of the shaft (1) holding the mass (6), in a sufficient number to heat the mass (6) to a smelting temp. of about 2000 deg C. The melt flows through the gaps in the mass (6) into the lower chamber (7) and to the tap hole (5).
